What Causes Depression in College Students?

Monday, August 02, 2021

Students and people from the scientific world are more likely to suffer from mental disorders. Every year, universities spend millions on maintaining mental health among students and staff. And parents and researchers periodically ask the question: does education harm a healthy state of mind?

Almost always, experiences affect the physical state of the body: depression is accompanied by loss of appetite, weakness, inhibition in actions, reactions, and speech, problems with sleep and concentration. Some people have impaired bowel function and sexual needs, headaches, heart or stomach aches, and skin diseases.

Product Review: Emma Sleep "The Emma Original Mattress" Philippines

Sunday, July 25, 2021

In a random conversation with my husband months ago, we reminisced our childhood days. We talked about the things that we missed the most and the things that we somewhat regret not doing those days. It's funny that we both missed our favorite foods, the things we do in school during our extra-curricular activities, and the daily routines from day til night. FUN FACT: We're classmates from Grade 2 to Fourth Year High School that's why we can relate and agree on trending or cringing topics from way back. Fast forward today, there's one thing that we somewhat regret not doing the most and that is having long hours of sleep when we entered junior high school. Yes, we were told that sleeping seven to nine hours a day is important, but teens like us in their growing up years kind of ignored it.

Now that we're in our late 30's, we are experiencing sleep problems and it's affecting our mind and body. There are many factors why an individual may experience an insufficient amount of sleep, it can be their lifestyle, age, current health condition, and stress. In my case, I'm a self-confessed coffee addict that's why when I drink coffee at night, chances are I'll be up until the wee hours of the morning. I also love chocolates and eating them after dinner has an impact too in my sleeping pattern. I've tried different ways on how to get quality sleep like listening to sleep music or watching those calming videos, drinking melatonin, applying lavender oil in temples, and turning off the lights but I still find it hard to fall asleep soundly at night. I've read in an article that having a comfortable bed, mattress, and pillow can also affect sleep that's why when Emma Sleep invited me to try their mattress, I accepted it even if there are things that I have to consider because I really want to experience quality sleep that my body is longing for years now. So without further ado, here's my honest-to-goodness review of Emma Sleep after sleeping on The Emma Original Mattress in Queen Size for three weeks.

Herbalife Nutrition E-Wellness Tour on Inner and Outer Nutrition

Saturday, May 29, 2021

Have you ever wondered why you easily get tired as the years go by? I think it's common for both men and women in their late 30's to experience changes in the biological functions of the body. When I was in my 20's I feel so energized even if I only have less than six hours of sleep. I can think normally and don't feel exhausted doing hour chores from day til night. Fast forward today, I'll be turning 40 soon and even if I have a restful sleep at night, my body tells me to take a nap mid-afternoon or when it's dinner time. I also noticed that my appetite goes up and down depending on my hormonal cycle.

As the body ages, it undergoes many changes and so does the nutrition it needs. While a balanced diet and an active lifestyle are important at any age, there are challenges specific for each age that need to be addressed. In the most recent Herbalife Nutrition E-Wellness Tour, Susan Bowerman, Senior Director, Worldwide Nutrition, Education and Training of Herbalife Nutrition, and Laura Chacon-Garbato, Chairwoman of the Outer Nutrition Advisory Board of Herbalife Nutrition, shared how eating habits and lifestyle choices can affect our body and skin. Sharing some highlights of the event that you need to know and understand after the jump!

Ways to Keep Your Brain Healthy the Herbalife Way!

Tuesday, April 20, 2021

Our brain, like the rest of our body, needs to be checked regularly. When I say check, it's like evaluating if one or all of the key components of mind health is present like strong memory, ability to think and reason, steady mood, and agreeable personality. With the recent events and the uncertainties happening, our mental health may not be in good shape. I presume that some of you have experienced signs of stress, anxiety attacks, and sleep disturbances because of our current situation.

It is very timely that Dr. Small, who is a member of the Herbalife Nutrition Advisory Board, talked about “Healthy Aging: Brain Fitness for Healthy Adults” at the most recent Virtual Wellness Tour hosted by Herbalife Nutrition Philippines. As part of the discussion, he shared his views on effective ways to improve memory and help maintain cognitive functions. He also provided relevant information on how balanced nutrition, sustained physical activity, and sound lifestyle practices will safeguard our ability to perform mental processes. Sharing the highlights of this online event below :)

Monday, April 05, 2021

It has been two years since the day that I decided to commit to a healthy lifestyle and to be able to do this, there are so many factors that I needed to consider. One of the most important things is to have a healthy relationship with food. I believe in the saying that "You are what you eat" and in order for me to stay on what is considered a healthy, proper, and nutritious diet, I have to lessen or drop one thing- SUGAR!!!

It's really, genuinely so hard especially for someone who has been indulging in cakes, pastries, chocolates, coffees, milk teas, and other treats loaded with sugar since the time of his or her existence. Another reason why sugar is a big part of my diet because we are a family of bakers. I was born and raised by bakery owners. From the time I opened my eyes, all the yummy and sweet treats were already in sight. Who can say no to the smell of freshly baked bread from day until night?! So yes, growing up eating slices of bread, cakes, pastries, and other foods with sugar or high sugar content is really hard to avoid. Too much sugar in my diet has negative effects so finding an alternative or a substitute is a must and this is where I discovered STEVIA. Know more about Stevia and the brands you can find in Philippine supermarkets and groceries after the jump.

Neucell Essence of Mushroom: Helping You See the Benefits of Yun-zhi

Thursday, March 11, 2021

One of my favorite comfort food is mushrooms. I love it in my soup, together with tasty gravy, or with lots of stir-fried garlic. These fleshy and edible fungi are packed rich in B Vitamins like riboflavin, niacin, and pantothenic acid. The combination is good for cardiovascular health, digestive system and maintaining healthy skin. Several centuries have passed and the mushroom, even up to this day, has become a staple ingredient not just in food but also for treatment due to its renowned medicinal benefits, especially in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).

There were many mushroom varieties that have sprouted, and claims about its wondrous benefits have become legendary. However, it was only probably in the 1970s that mushrooms’ properties were studied up close. Animal testing saw success in slowing down cancer cell growth and improve mortality, but the real test was when it involved humans. During clinical trials, mushroom compounds proved effective in reducing cancer mortality while improving response to cancer treatments. Since its introduction decades ago, mushroom extracts have been used as medicine in Japan and as an adjunct to cancer treatment. Read more about Yun-zhi and its benefits after the jump!
