Max's Restaurant Celebrates 77th Anniversary

Wednesday, October 19, 2022

Max’s Restaurant, the iconic Filipino restaurant chain famous for its Sarap-to-the-Bones® Fried Chicken is celebrating its 77th anniversary this October 18. The brand looks back to where it all began amidst the ashes of the Post-World-War-2 era, when Stanford-educated teacher Maximo Gimenez would host his American GI friends for drinks in his home along Scout Tuazon, Quezon City—with his niece Ruby Trota giving birth to the signature fried chicken recipe, with its iconic pairing of Banana Ketchup and a tangy dash of Worcestershire Sauce to go with a hearty side of kamote fries and piping-hot dinner rolls.

Since then, this home-crafted dish has grown to become a sentimental favorite among generations of Pinoy families, both in the Philippines and across such geographies as the United States of America, Canada, the Middle East, and Singapore, where Max’s has likewise spread through the decades to bring pride to Filipino cuisine. Thus, as a way to give thanks to both new and loyal fans, special deals and surprises are lined up throughout the entire month of October.

Kuya J Restaurant Eastwood Now Open + A New Look and Menu

Saturday, December 14, 2019

Delectable food offerings, value for money, and homey ambiance sum up what I usually look for a decent restaurant. I must admit that Filipino food is the least cuisine that I opt whenever we go out for lunch or dinner because, in my head, I can eat those dishes they offer at home (hello, Pinoy Drunken Chef!), but boy I was wrong when I got to taste for the very first time Kuya J Resto's yummy in my tummy dishes.

Last Friday, I was invited to the opening of its newest restaurant in City Walk Plaza in Eastwood City, Quezon City plus the unveiling of their brand new look and additional food items in their menu.  More about the launch after the jump!

Jollibee Winnipeg Canada

Wednesday, January 25, 2017

Jollibee opened its first store in Winnipeg, Canada, home to over 70,000 Filipinos last December 15. The inagural location was chosen because Winnipeg is home away from home for a lot of our countrymen, with Tagalog being the second-most common mother tongue language spoken. You have to visit this branch and see Jollibee in bonnet and scarf, cool beans!

In typical Jollibee fashion, the store was welcomed by long cues with people lining up as early as 10:30 PM the night before. See highlights of the opening after the jump!

Jollibee Chicago Illinois

Raise your hands if you're one of our 'kababayans' there in the U.S. reading this blog post right now. I'm sure that most of the Filipinos residing in Chicago, Illinois waited for this and finally a Jollibee store opened recently and  I heard that it was a big success or should I say a blockbuster one!

My relatives in Chicago were so excited to set foot inside Jollibee Chicago Illinois during the opening last month because they're missing Chicken Joy, Yum Burger, Jolly Spaghetti, and a lot more from the one and only Jollibee. Have you seen the video of the store opening, yet? If not, sharing with you some photos from my relatives and a video from Jollibee USA below :)

I borrowed some of the photos which I saw at my Tito Van's Facebook wall. Of course I asked his permission to grab them and share it with you all :) Tito Van and Tita Alex- all smiles while ordering their faves but first, let them take a selfie :)

They're really excited and happy so after seeing those smiles despite the long queue during the opening day, I said to myself that Filipinos will always and forever be at home with Jollibee! I'm so happy for them especially when I saw them dining together inside the store.

Max's 70th Birthday Celebration #HBDMaxs

Wednesday, November 18, 2015

Correct me if I'm wrong if I say that we are so lucky that there's one Filipino restaurant that made almost all the celebrations in our life memorable and awesome! I grew up in a family where celebrations are very important. Everyone must be present in a special occasion whether it's a birthday party, anniversary, or other important gatherings that bring us together.

In the past 70 years, one name stayed on top of the game. The house that fried chicken built turned 70 last October. This is a very big milestone for Max's Restaurant and to celebrate this Platinum year, they prepared a big birthday party to all the guests invited. The grand celebration was held where it all started, the first branch of Max's Restaurant in Quezon City. To see the highlights of this big event, scroll down please :)
Max's 70th Birthday Celebration #HBDMaxs
I'm definitely sure that every Filipino will agree to this: perfectly seasoned, satisfyingly crispy, and delightfully comforting are a few words that describe Max’s Restaurant's famous chicken, a dish that has remained a favorite among Filipinos for so long that it is an institution. There is definitely something special about Max’s fried chicken that sets it apart from the others. It is, some might say, a palatable source of Filipino pride.

Not just anybody can cook chicken in the deeply authentic and Filipino way Max’s Restaurant does. Max’s fried chicken is a dish made with love through a recipe that has passed through careful hands across generations, and is suspected to comprise much more than secret seasonings and undiscovered cooking techniques. “Our goal is to ensure we replicate this Sarap-to-the-Bones chicken experience in each restaurant,” Director and Chief Marketing Officer of Max’s Group Inc., Jim Fuentebella shares.

There were also a display of all the memorabilia like the old uniforms, button pins, first menu, receipts, and all the old things that serves as a proof of Max's Fried Chicken's great history. Here's the summary of Max's Fried Chicken's history:

  • It is this diligence and dedication to detail that some claim “The House That Fried Chicken Built” became what it is today.
  • Typical of the Filipino hospitality, the restaurant's founder Maximo Gimenez frequently welcomed American soldiers into his home for hearty meals in 1945, after World War II.
  • The soldiers enjoyed themselves so much and so often that they began to insist on paying, and eventually convinced Maximo to open a cafe.
  • His niece Ruby was the secret ingredient to the cafe’s success, as it was her recipes that were used in cooking the fare that later became famous.
  • And needless to say, it was the chicken that became a favorite among the GIs, despite how different it was from the fried chicken they were accustomed to eating in the United States. What Ruby had to offer was clearly something genuine.
  • Now known as “Nanay Ruby,” her talents proved capable of cooking much more than chicken, as the favorites among her fare include the famous Max’s Restaurant Sinigang, the Kare Kare, Pancit Canton and Lumpiang Ubod to name a few, all key elements to their successful and long lasting menu.
  • A hallmark of genuine Filipino culinary tradition, Max's Restaurant is a place of comfort that is every Filipino's home away from home.

Time truly flies when the stomach is satisfied. This year, Max’s Restaurant is celebrated 70 years of delightful restaurant service that has managed to grow from a simple home cooking cafe to a successful international restaurant chain. A 70 year career in the competitive food industry is certainly something noteworthy and a definite cause for celebration. This is a milestone event that the restaurant hopes to share with its long time customers and friends, Max’s Restaurant celebrates this achievement in more ways than one, and thanks its supporters first.

Monday, September 14, 2015

Hi dearies! Two weeks ago, I was invited by Taste of Capitol Filipino-American Bistro Diner to try their menu offerings. At first I have no idea about the newest dine-in and chill out place located in one of the busy streets of Quezon City. The place has a laid back look. You can feel the American-Mexican-Filipino fusion once you step inside the bistro diner because of the displays and the paintings on their tables and walls.

They've served their best-selling entrees to invited bloggers that day. Aside from all time favorites that I'll be sharing the photos below, they are also serving all day breakfast, big breakfast, favorite desserts, flavored  beers, and cocktails. I've heard that Taste of Capitol first location was in Kapitolyo, Pasig then last August they decided to move and start their business here in Quezon city as a bistro-diner. See some of their delectable and savory offerings below :)

This is the first floor of Taste of Capitol. There's a mini bar where you can order your favorite drinks and chill out with friends. They have flavored beers, wines and liquors, and cocktails. They are also offering promos for their drinks so if you're looking for a place where you can eat and get booze at the same time, this is the perfect place for you.

The photos below are just some of the offerings on their menu. The price is affordable and some of the servings are good for sharing. Here are the food offerings that are dubbed as the all time favorites:

1. Crispy Liempo Nachos

Their nacho corn chips re not the usual yellow corn chips. It is colorful- you can see green, red, and orange corn chips served with tomatoes, onions, lechon bits, and drizzled with mayonnaise and spices plus sprinkled with grated cheese. This is one of my favorites from the menu!

2. Buffalo Wings

If you're planning to eat chicken and can't decide if you'll go for the usual fried chicken or chicken barbeque, this one will answer your dilemma. Chicken fillet wrapped in bacon with gravy sauce.

Filipino Merienda with Via Mare at 40

Sunday, August 23, 2015

Home is where the heart is! When it comes to restaurant dishes and viands, Filipino cuisine will always be in my heart. Although I'm craving for international cuisines, no one can take the place of Filipino dishes in my heart. So when craving for authentic Filipino food arise, may it be for breakfast, lunch, merienda, or dinner, Via Mare is here to satisfy those hunger pangs anytime of the day!

I was invited by Via Mare to an afternoon of Filipino food delights. It was an intimate event with lifestyle and food bloggers held in Via Mare TriNoma branch. The branch is inside Landmark so if you're planning to dine in there, be sure to go inside Landmark department store where Via Mare is located. Excited to see what treats we had at Via Mare? Scroll down please and get ready to see those mouth-watering merienda by the one and only Via Mare!

Via Mare's Brief History

Unlike other cuisines’ penchant for presentation, Filipino cuisine is served in a more family-oriented manner–without the pomp and frills. And just as many islands there are in the country, so is the number of variations a single dish could possibly have.

But things changed in September 1975 when Via Mare Seafood Specialty Restaurant opened its doors to the public. After the very first dish was served, Filipino cuisine was never the same again.

The restaurant did not only change the Filipino’s perception of its own cuisine, it also brought global recognition to the sophistication and complex flavors of the Philippines. Via Mare’s chef Glenda Barretto, who has been at the helm of the restaurant since its inception, and her strong belief in the Filipino cuisine’s potential to be world class is what pushed the restaurant to keep outdoing its achievements.
Filipino Merienda with Via Mare at 40
While Barretto’s contemporaries would focus on intercontinental cuisine as their piece de résistance, she opted to highlight and present well-loved Filipino dishes with modern touches that made it more palatable to foreign guests. If lumpia was known as a roll, the Via Mare version had the filling wrapped in pouches held together by spring onions. The tinola was also given a fresh take by serving the soup in a carved papaya or as a flan, inspired by the Chawanmushi of Japan.

“The past 40 years is not only the story of a restaurant, it is a story of the Filipino people,” Barretto said. “Via Mare is our pride as we helped a lot of Filipinos enjoy and be proud of the cuisine that we have here, of recipes that we have enjoyed throughout our childhood, and of what Filipino fine cuisine truly tastes like.”

Filipino favorites loved for generations

True to its Filipino heritage, Via Mare serves Filipino cuisine that matches the eating pattern of Filipinos: breakfast, lunch, dinner, and merienda – a meal that is served in between the main meals of the day.

Merienda, or light snacks, are as important as main meals for Filipinos. At Via Mare, diners can choose from the following well-loved Filipino fare such as:

PUTO BUMBONG (P80)

One of the favorite deserts of the Filipinos during holiday season but at Via Mare, it's available all year round. You can choose the kind of cheese you want: cheddar cheese or queso de bola.

Puto Bumbong
BIBINGKA (P160 | P130)

Another well-loved dessert and my favorite too. I can eat bibingka anytime of the day and any day in 365 days of the year. I don't have to wait for Christmas because Via Mare serves this hot off the clay pot.

GUINATAANG HALO-HALO (P98)

This is my mom's favorite snack. I'll treat my mom on my next visit to Via Mare and she'll be surprised with this. Taro, purple yam and sweet potato stewed in rich coconut cream with rice dumpling, plantain banana and jack fruit- this comfort food gives energy with vitamins and minerals at the same time. Talk about go and glow foods!

PUTO MAYA (P165)

Oh, so this is puto maya. I was surprised to see the real puto maya. I thought it's just a puto (rice cake) prepared in a different way. It's my first time to see this Filipino dessert- glutinous rice steamed with coconut cream served with ripe mango.

 BIBINGKA CASSAVA (P70)

Another Filipino dessert that I considered 'heavy' as a snack. It's very filling. Carbo loading? Then this is the dessert for you!

PALITAW (P55)

This Filipino merienda reminds me of my childhood. Every afternoon, my siblings will wait for the palitaw vendor to pass by our house. It's classic- poached rice patties with grated coconut and sesame seeds.

They also have comfort food like arroz caldo, tokwa’t baboy, pansit, fresh lumpia ubod to name a few that's also serve during merienda.

ARROZ CALDO (P205 | P185)

This rice porridge is served plain with egg or chicken for a savory meal. A comfort food perfect for cold weather.

DINUGUAN AT PUTO (P205)

Some foreigners call it 'chocolate beef', it's one of the favorite dishes among Filipinos. According to Wikipedia, dinuguan is a Filipino savory stew of meat and/or offal (typically lungs, kidneys, intestines, ears, heart and snout) simmered in a rich, spicy dark gravy of pig blood, garlic, chili (most often siling mahaba), and vinegar. Paired with puto for a happy tummy meal!

LUGAW TOPPINGS (P225)

 FRESH LUMPIA UBOD (P132)

This is just a small version of the lumpia ubod- a spring roll of ehart of palm with pork and shrimp. The wrapper is made from scratch and surprisingly it's good. The texture is soft and a little chewy.

Ending scrumptious feasts on a sweet note are iced desserts such as halo-halo, mais con hielo, and guinomis. If you want to try these three cold desserts but you're already full, you can try the shooters.

SHOOTERS (P98)

A small serving of halo-halo, mais con hielo, and guinomis served in a small glass. Satisfy your iced desserts cravings with these three.

Shooters: halo-halo, mais con hielo, guinomis

These offerings are good for sharing so fret not about the price. I was overwhelmed by the servings at first, o if I'll do the math, the price is okay. It's worth every peso you'll spend!

“At 40 years, we have shown the world and most especially our fellow Filipinos, what Filipino cuisine is all about – it is about the freshest of ingredients cooked in influences of our ancestors and the rich heritage of the Filipino nation, sprinkled with the love and affection of a Filipino chef,” Barretto said.

Delight in the well-loved Filipino flavors and savor your classic family favorites at Via Mare. Truly, you can never go wrong with Filipino food. It's simple but full of flavor and inspiration. These classics what others would call will always have a special place in our hearts. I do hope you'll agree even though some of you may be craving for international cuisines, these food offerings from Via Mare have imprinted memories from childhood that you'll cherish for a lifetime!
