     Not everyone is born with perfect eyesight, so some people need to wear glasses or contacts to correct their vision to 20/20. Eye muscles also weaken as people get older, so even if they didn’t need corrective lenses when they were young, many people might as they age.

     Fortunately, you can correct your vision naturally by doing eye exercises, and preserve your eyesight or make improvements by eating healthy foods. Here are some of the ways to correct your vision naturally without undergoing eye surgery like LASIK.

Eat a Healthy Diet

     The eyes need nutrients to keep them healthy and to avoid diseases like macular degeneration. This disease usually appears as people get older and it can cause vision loss in the retina’s central area. It’s the leading cause of vision loss, affecting about 10 million Americans.

     To help prolong the health of your eyes, make sure your diet includes foods with antioxidants and minerals like zinc. Some of the fruits and vegetables you should eat are:
  • Carrots
  • Strawberries
  • Broccoli
  • Spinach
  • Sweet Potato
  • Citrus Fruits

     Foods containing vitamins A, C, and E, zinc and Omega 3 fatty acids can help improve eye health and prevent some eye diseases.

Keep Prescription Up-to-Date

     If you wear contacts or eyeglasses, it is important to keep your prescription up-to-date. Most adults from 18 to 60 should get a thorough eye examination every two years. Adults with chronic health conditions like diabetes or a family history of eye diseases should have a yearly exam.

     People over the age of 61 need a yearly exam as well. If your contact prescription has changed, you can go online and order a new box of contacts at and they will update your prescription to make sure you always get the right lenses.

Exercise the Eyes

     Along with exercising your body to stay fit, you can also exercise the eyes to improve your vision. One eye exercise that you can do at any time is to palm your eyes. This exercise helps to rest the optic nerve by blocking eternal light and activity.

     To palm the eyes, sit in a chair with your arms supported by a pillow or some books on your desk. Rub your hands together to warm them, then gently cover your eyes with the palms of your hands. Don’t touch your eyes and keep the fingers together to block out the light.

     Relax your mind and body, taking deep breaths and imagining blackness or a happy memory. Do this exercise for about three minutes.

     You can strengthen the muscles in the eyes with a range of motion exercises to help improve your eyesight. Relax your face and move your eyes in patterns like figure 8’s, from side to side, up and down, and in circles. Do each exercise eight to 10 times at home or the office.

     By managing chronic health conditions, eating fruits and vegetables, getting your eyes examined regularly, and exercising your body and eyes, you can keep your eyes healthy and improve your vision naturally.
