Product Review: Sunnywood Harvester's Rice + Crab Maki Recipe

Friday, October 19, 2018

Rice is the staple food of the Filipinos and we are blessed because our country can produce different variants of rice that we eat for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Don't get me wrong, (because of the recent news on rice hoarding) but long before the time our country is indeed gifted in this department.

Speaking of rice, there's one brand that I recently discovered and been eating for weeks now. Sunnywood Harvester's Rice has Sinandomeng and Dinorado variant as well as colored specialty rice. I presume that you've seen this brand in the supermarket but you opted to buy the brand with a lower price tag. Let me share some trivia why you need to buy rice from a trusted brand and a simple international recipe using an alternative ingredient from Sunnywood Harvester's Rice:)

When Harvester's Rice products landed in our doorstep, I was surprised because I received not only the staple Sinandomeng or Dinorado variant because it came with the black, glutinous, and multi-grain rice too. I got giddy and read the labels on each resealable pouch which I'm totally digging as it makes storing a breeze. It's convenient too because the rice will stay fresh for a longer period of time.

The black and multi-grain variants are good for health conscious individuals or those who have a strict dietary plan to follow like diabetics, hypertensive, and low-calorie intake. The glutinous or malagkit rice, on the other hand, is perfect for making comfort food like arroz caldo, champorado, ginataan mais, kakanin, and other sweet Filipino native delicacies. But there's one thing that I've discovered- I can substitute the malagkit rice to make our favorite sushi, California Maki or crab maki to be exact by using the Harvester's Malagkit Rice instead of the usual Japanese rice.

But first, let me share some reasons why you still need rice and carbohydrates in your life even if you think it's making you fat or give you diabetes and other chronic diseases in the future.

1. Rice gives you energy. Don't forget the GO FOODS!

2. If you think it will make you fat- NOT! as long as you eat in small portion and in moderation. White rice has a high glycemic index and is a no-no if you cannot control your blood sugar that's why see number 3.

3. There's a lot of substitute for white rice which will not only benefit those who have diabetes and hypertension, it is also good for cancer patients and those who are trying to lose weight.

4. YES to substitute- go for brown rice, red rice, black rice, and multi-grain. These have different properties that will not only make you enjoy eating rice but will help you get the nutrition you need for a healthy mind and body.

Sunnywood Harvester's Black Rice- a healthy and nutritious grain from Harvester's Rice line-up. It is the number one anti-oxidant rice that may help prevent cancer and is lower in calories. Rich source of fiber, multivitamin B, essential oil, minerals, iron, and other elements. Lower in glycemic index. Available in 2 kg and 5 kg (case ordering available); vacuum-packed

Sunnywood Harvester's Multi-Grain- goodness of 3 whole grain Black, Red, and Brown Rice in a pack that is combined to provide your body the maximum nutritional benefits. Its daily consumption coupled with proper diet and exercise aids in weight management, helps tone muscles and keeps your digestive system on track. It steadies insulin levels to prevent fat storage. Available in 2kgs pack.

There are other rice variants that Harvester's offer for a healthy you like the red and brown rice so this time let's go to the rice variant where you can indulge occasionally like in making desserts and other dishes that will satisfy your craving. They have Thai Jasmine Rice and Malakit Rice. The first one is superior when it comes to taste and texture in rice. The best way to appreciate this wonderful and oh-so-delicious rice is to try it. Warning (albeit a good one): It might become a habit! That’s okay. It’s a good habit!

The latter one is Sunnywood Harvester's Malagkit Rice- the rice variant that I used for my Crab Maki recipe below. It has a distinctive sticky quality that makes it ideal for making native dishes like biko, suman, other rice snacks and desserts.

Crab Maki

Ingredients:

1 cup Harvester's Malagkit
1 pack Crab Stick
1 pack Nori
1 medium-size mango, cut in stick size
1 medium-size cucumber, cut in stick size
1 small bottle Japanese Mayo (optional)
salt, rice wine or vinegar, and sugar to taste
Wasabi paste, Kikkoman Soy Sauce, Calamansi for dipping

Procedure:

1. Cook rice, as usual, set aside.
2. Mix salt, rice wine or vinegar, and sugar in a small bowl. Once completely dissolved, add the mixture in cooked malagkit rice then mix until it combines with the rice.
3. Prepare your sushi roll. Use a cling wrap so that it won't stick to the nori when rolling.
4. Place the nori in the sushi roll. Add malagkit rice, crab stick, mango, cucumber, and Japanese mayo on top.
5. Roll the bamboo mat until you make a roll. Slice and serve with dipping sauce on the side.

What I like:
  • Sunnywood Harverster's Rice is fairly priced after comparing prices in the supermarket.
  • It offers a lot of rice variants that are perfect for all your rice cooking needs.
  • We ate both the Sinandomeng and Dinorado variants and all I can say is "Ang sarap kasi ng kanin" when my husband asked me why we cook more rice than the usual.
  • I'm a pack of neat packaging. I love that all the rice variants are properly packed and sealed in a neat sack of rice and resealable plastic bags.
  • Hooray for more weight availability-2 kg, 5 kg, and 25 kg.
  • Easily accessible.
  • Has nutrition facts at the back of the sack/pack.
  • It offers a wide array of rice variants.

What I don't like:
  • None so far!

Will I repurchase? Yes!

Recommendation:
I give this a 4.75/5 rating. I gave it an almost a perfect score because it's easy to cook, taste great, and has a wide array of variants to choose from. The rice when cooked doesn't change its texture throughout the day. It doesn't spoil easily and easily available in the supermarket.

  2. Tama ka Ms Kath, we usually opted for the lower price hehe but ako i buy the black rice na nasa pic mo sometimes, i mean hubby does since malapit lang work nya sa Rustan's. The black rice is wat ive been using as substitute minsan sa white rice at home. He was detected having hypertension way back and i am monitoring his food intake. Kay kids din i want them to eat healthy kahit man lng di eto ung lagi namin kinakain ehheh kasi pricey nga din si black rice. Havent tried those other variants sa pic posted , might let hubby check on this mukhang masarap and id like to make that one "Crab Maki" . Thanks for sharing Ms Kath lalo na yang mga reasons parang reminder narin
