As the back-to-school season slowly kicked in, many Filipino moms started shifting back into routine mode, planning baon ideas, fixing school supplies, and figuring out how to make home spaces feel more functional again for the incoming school year.
Last week, SM Home brought together practical ideas for modern Filipino households through its Start Smart for School campaign, featuring a special SM Home Masterclass held at SM Megamall. The event officially launched last May 22 at SM Home Megamall, Lower Ground, SM Store Megamall Building B, with interactive sessions focused on baon preparation and creating distraction-free learning spaces at home. One of the featured speakers was Nikki Garcia, known by many moms online through the #nikkimbento community. Moms who enjoyed seeing beautifully prepared lunch boxes that were both thoughtful and realistic for everyday family life had likely already come across her content. During the session, she shared practical baon prep tips and simple ways to make lunch preparation feel less overwhelming during busy mornings. Nikki's tips include: Sandwiches, boiled eggs, and instant snacks are lifesavers. Prep easy bento snack boxes with protein, veggies, nuts, cheese, dried fruits, and veggie sticks using the inverted pyramid food idea. For warm baon: pour boiled water into the stainless container first, wait 10 minutes, wipe dry, then add the food so it stays warm longer.

Meanwhile, Mariel Martinez of Project Playtime led discussions about building a better study zone at home especially helpful for families still navigating hybrid learning setups, after-school routines, and screen-time balance. As a licensed speech-language pathologist, she also shared insights on how a child’s environment could affect focus, independence, and learning habits. Her tips include: Create an intentional study corner at home, even just a tiny space with good lighting and less clutter. Practice the 90-90-90 posture while studying to help avoid back and neck strain. Better lighting = less eye strain + better focus. Follow the 20-20-20 rule during screen breaks. Visual schedules help make routines feel lighter and easier to follow. Declutter little by little because calmer spaces really help with focus too. Focus hertz/background sounds can surprisingly help during study time.

What made the campaign relatable was how it reflected the reality of many Filipino homes today. Dining tables had become homework stations, mini offices, and meal prep areas all at once. Creating small systems at home whether through organized baon prep or intentional study corners genuinely helped make everyday routines feel lighter.

The SM Home Masterclass became part of a month-long back-to-school initiative that also featured online content, expert tips, and in-store promotions in participating SM Home branches nationwide. For many Filipino families preparing for another school season, it served as a reminder that sometimes, being “school ready” started with making home feel a little more organized, calmer, and easier to manage every day.
