Making smart choices is a life skill that one must develop in order to set long-term goals. As a stay at home mom, being smart in all aspects of living makes life easy and sustainable. I don't need to be perfect, I just need to make smart decisions when it comes to important aspects of my mommy life: my family's health, proper education of my son, a healthy relationship inside our home, and the growth of each family member as a whole.
Speaking of family's health, I always make sure to incorporate smart choices in the grocery stuff we buy and the food that we eat. I've mastered three simple hacks in grocery shopping that I'll be sharing after the jump. I also discovered a product that fits in one of the categories- Goya Hazelnut Double Spread.

We always do our grocery shopping for the food item on a weekly basis as other household items like cleaning, bathing, and other stuff are bought either on the first or last week of the month. There are three supermarkets near our subdivision that's why it's easy to buy the stuff that we need any time of the day.

1. Make a list
This is the first thing that we do. I encourage my husband and my son to be a part of this weekly planning. We ask one another what food viand we want for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. After coming up with a menu plan, that's the time when we list down the ingredients we will be needing.
2. Set a weekly budget
We set a budget for the food items that we will buy in the supermarket or groceries like fresh produce, meat, fish, poultry, snacks, and miscellaneous items needed for cooking. Prices of these commodities may go higher or lower that's why if there's a spare amount, I make sure to set it aside for number 3.
3. Choose alternatives
There will be a time that the items on your list will be out of stock or will not fit the price range of your budget. Be ready to choose alternatives. You just have to be smart in deciding what to get as an alternative. Good thing that I discovered an alternative that's at par with the leading brand. Here's a short story:
My son loves hazelnut spread. I'll be honest that we have stocks of his favorite Nutella because my mother in law works abroad and brings bottles during her yearly vacation. So when we ran out of hazelnut spread, I will just wait for months for our supply not until I discovered Goya Double Hazelnut Spread during an event that I attended weeks ago.

I was amazed that it tastes almost the same as Nutella but way cheaper, almost half the price! The cheapskate momma got so excited because I can now incorporate hazelnut chocolate recipes into our weekly menu without breaking the bank.
I've been preparing desserts for months now and I'm happy that my family appreciates this life skill that I'm trying to learn. I don't know how to cook but practice makes perfect, right? With the help of cooking videos, I was able to learn simple recipes like pork nilaga, tinola, and sauteed vegetables to name a few plus desserts like no-bake cakes, graham cakes, and chocolate coated polvoron.

Let me share with you a simple chocolate coated polvoron recipe that I made using Goya Hazelnut Chocolate Spread. It's made of simple ingredients that you can easily buy in the groceries. I was able to save too because the chocolate coating I made came from Goya Hazelnut Spread that I already have in my pantry. It doubles as a spread, a chocolate coating, and a lot more if you wish too. Talk about the convenience an affordable chocolate spread can give!

Procedure:
1. Mix and combine the crushed grahams, all-purpose flour, powdered milk, white sugar in a pan. Add the melted butter. Mix until the mixture turns golden brown.
2. Press into mold using a polvoron mold.
3. Prepare your chocolate coating. Scoop an ample amount of Goya Double Chocolate Hazelnut spread and sit over a pan of simmering water. Allow the chocolate to melt a little while stirring occasionally. You can now use the melted spread.
4. Dip the polvoron in the pan of melted chocolate spread and let it cool. You may place the covered polvoron inside the freezer before wrapping or serving.
Yay! Never thought that I can use Goya Double Chocolate Spread as a coating for polvoron to create a simple dessert for my family. I'm happy that I found an alternative that has the same quality and taste but more affordable compared to an imported brand.
Choosing an alternative is one of the smart choices that we need to master. It's not only practical but we also get to save money and learn the art of spending wisely. Learning the hacks I mentioned above will not only spend money but time and effort as well when doing our grocery shopping so when making smart choices, always go double, go smart! Goya Double Hazelnut Spread is available in supermarkets and groceries nationwide for P154 php (350g)
