     Running a small business is not always easy. I know this because I have been there—and I am still there. From having a family bakeshop and rental business to now being hands-on with our small café, I have learned that being a small business owner means wearing many hats.

     One minute, you are checking the supplies. Next, you are answering a customer. Then you are looking at the bills, checking your inventory, managing expenses, and thinking about how to make everything work within the budget. And honestly, every peso counts.

When Every Bill Matters

     One of the things I have learned as a mompreneur is that you cannot simply ignore rising costs because everything is connected. When fuel prices go up, transportation and delivery can become more expensive. When food prices increase, ingredients cost more. And when electricity bills go up, it can affect the overall cost of running a business.

     For a small café like ours, electricity is something we use every day. We need it for our equipment, refrigeration, lights, fans, air-conditioning, and so many other things that help keep the business running. At home, it is the same story. As someone who also works on digital content, I need electricity for my laptop, phone, Wi-Fi, lights, and other equipment I use for work. So when we talk about energy, I don't see it as something far away or complicated. It is part of our everyday life. From “Ang Mahal!” to “Ano Kaya ang Puwede Natin Gawin?”

     Whenever the bills start coming in, I have those moments when I look at the total and think, “Grabe, ang mahal na naman!” I know I’ve said it many times. But lately, I’ve been thinking that perhaps it’s time to look at things a little differently. Yes, costs are rising, and that’s one of the challenges of running a small business. Of course, we all want to find ways to save. But instead of stopping at the frustration, maybe we can also ask ourselves: What can we do differently?

     That is where clean and renewable energy comes into the conversation. For years, I thought of clean energy as something that belonged to the future. Something important, but something we would eventually get to. Today, I see it differently. The good news is, clean energy isn’t just something we can hope for someday. It’s already becoming part of the Philippine energy landscape today and I think that’s something worth being hopeful about.

     Running our small café has made me appreciate even more how much small businesses matter in our everyday lives. Behind every small café, sari-sari store, online shop, salon, home-based business, or family-run store are people trying to make a living, support their families, and build something of their own. When operating costs become difficult to manage, small businesses feel it quickly. 

      For small businesses like ours, having more options when it comes to energy can matter. When you’re watching your operating costs closely, every little bit can make a difference. It can help us think beyond simply surviving from month to month and give us more room to plan for the future. Maybe we can invest in better equipment, expand our products, hire another person, or simply have a little more breathing room in our business budget. These may sound like small things, but for a small business owner, small things can mean a lot.

Reliable Energy Means More Resilient Businesses

     One thing I have learned from being a business owner is that you always have to be prepared for the unexpected. A supplier might not deliver on time, an important piece of equipment might suddenly stop working, or sales might be slower than expected. Sometimes, power interruptions can also affect the way we operate. Reliable energy matters because businesses cannot simply press pause whenever there is a problem. 

     For small businesses, every hour can matter, every order matters, and every customer matters. Every opportunity to serve our customers and keep the business moving also matters. That is why I like the idea of building communities that are more resilient when it comes to energy. When families and businesses have access to more reliable energy options, it can help support households, businesses, and the communities they are part of.

It Is Bigger Than the Electricity Bill

     For me, this is not only about saving money on electricity. It is about the bigger picture. It is about families trying to manage their household expenses, entrepreneurs trying to keep their businesses running, and workers who need reliable power to do their jobs. I see this in the community around our café, too. Small businesses and families depend on reliable energy to keep things going. It makes me think about the kind of future we want to build. Clean and renewable energy can be part of that future, and we don’t have to wait until tomorrow to start talking about it.

Small Business Owners Are Good at Finding Possibilities

     If there is one thing I know about mompreneurs and small business owners, it is that we are resourceful. We find ways and make things work. We turn a small opportunity into something bigger, learn new things when we need to, and try again when something doesn't work. That same mindset can apply to the way we think about energy. 

     Instead of looking at rising costs and feeling like there is nothing we can do, we can start learning more about how cleaner and renewable energy is becoming part of our energy system. Not every small business will have access to the same options, and that’s okay. We don’t have to know everything right away. Sometimes, it simply starts with asking questions, understanding what is available to us, and being open to new possibilities.

A Little More Room to Grow

     As a mom and a small business owner, I know that the future can sometimes feel uncertain. There are bills to pay, responsibilities to manage, and unexpected expenses that come along the way. But I’ve also learned that being realistic doesn’t mean we have to stop hoping for something better.

      When I think about energy, I’m starting to see clean and renewable sources as another possibility worth learning about. I don’t have all the answers, and I know that not every small business has access to the same options. But I believe it’s worth understanding what is available and how these changes could eventually make a difference to businesses like ours.

     I see this differently now whenever our monthly bills come in. Every peso matters. If we could manage some of our costs better, that could mean having a little more room to improve the café, put something back into the business, or simply breathe a little easier.

     Maybe that’s what being hopeful as a small business owner looks like not expecting everything to change overnight, but being open to better possibilities. For me, it starts with learning more and looking at familiar challenges in a different way. And if that can give small businesses like ours a little more room to grow, then that’s something I’m hopeful about.
