Our Wonderful Ocean Park Hong Kong Experience via Klook Travel Philippines

Friday, April 19, 2019

Hong Kong is one of the international destinations that I will highly recommend to families traveling with kids for an awesome vacation. There are so many family and kid-friendly attractions in this country aside from shopping and food tripping. I've been to Hong Kong thrice and I will never get tired of coming back for more vacations in the years to come.

We celebrated my son's 9th birthday in one of my dream amusement park destinations located in the Southern District of Hong Kong- OCEAN PARK :) It is the second largest in the country and considered as one massive park because it's also a marine park, an oceanarium, an animal theme park in one. We spent half a day at Ocean Park because there was an unexpected typhoon during our visit but there were no regrets because we all had a blast. Sharing our experience, tips, and what to expect at Ocean Park Hong Kong and why it is best to book your tickets online via Klook :)

My son celebrated his birthday in advance in Hong Kong last year. We went there for a 3-day trip from June 4, 5, and 6 and our only itinerary was to visit Ocean Park with food tripping down the infamous streets of Nathan Road on the side. We stayed at Caritas Bianchi Lodge in Yau Ma Tei that is a 2-minute walk from the MRT station.

I thought our trip would be a breeze as the weather was fine when we arrived but on the second day, there was a typhoon and it's raining cats and dogs all over Hong Kong. The typhoon will not stop us from enjoying this trip so instead of going around 10:00 a.m., we opted to go there after lunch.

How do I get from MTR to Ocean Park Hong Kong?

Riding public transportation in Hong Kong is easy and convenient. You can take an express bus, a taxi, a private car, or an MTR going to Ocean Park without hassles. Since we are only a 2-minute walk to Yau Ma Tei MTR station, we decided to ride the train.

1. From Yau Ma Tei MRT take the Tsuen Wan Line trains going to Admiralty.
2. Get off at Admiralty Station and take the South Island Line Interchange. Ride the trains going to Ocean Park.
3. Alight at the Ocean Park Station. Ocean Park entrance is just a few minutes walk from the MTR station.

Where do I get tickets for Ocean Park Hong Kong?

Park tickets are sold at the entrance but in my experience, it's best to book your tickets online for best deals and great price options. I booked our daytime tickets in advance on their website: https://www.klook.com/en-PH/activity/23-ocean-park-hong-kong-hong-kong/. There are also other options that you may choose from like admission + meal, admission + fasttrack among others. After booking, you may either print the voucher or show the pdf file with QR code on your smartphone at the gate of Ocean Park for admission.

When is the best time to visit Ocean Park?

Based on my experience, it's best to visit during off-peak seasons and on weekdays. Expect that weekends like Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays will have a large crowd of visitors. I advise you to research also on Chinese Public Holidays if you want the lesser crowd and avoid long queues on rides.

We were still lucky because even though there's a typhoon on the day of our visit, the weather condition was not extremely harsh. There's a little rain that falls from time to time with gentle winds. Some of the rides and areas of the park are closed not because of the weather but because it was under maintenance.

It was 1:00 p.m. when we arrived at Ocean Park and bought this disposable adult raincoat for Kenzo in one of the souvenir shops inside the amusement park.

Park opening hours is from 10:00 a.m.- 6:00 p.m. If you want to enjoy your daytime tickets at the park, be sure to be there before opening time. You'll be the first in line and you will get to enjoy your stay at the park from opening till closing.

What to wear to Ocean Park?

You'll be overwhelmed by how big Ocean Park is so wear your most comfortable shoes and clothes. If you'll be visiting this month until June, expect sunny weather. Wear thin, breathable clothing and don't forget to bring a jacket and umbrella in case it rains during your visit. You can also bring a bottle of water because there is numerous drinking fountain inside the park.

What to bring during your visit? If you're like me who likes to bring our house inside my bag, listen! You just need yourself, your phone, power banks, sunscreen, wipes, extra clothes, disposable raincoats in case it rains, alcohol for the clean freaks, cap or hat, and a Wifi Device.

Wore my most comfortable dress and shoes in this adventure.

Did you know that Klook also offers 4g WiFi Rentals for pickup at the Hong Kong Airport? Yes, and it's one of the best decision I made on this trip. Booking this device enabled me to stay connected with my family and friends while we are in Hong Kong.

What to do in Ocean Park?

Ocean Park is a huge park. It has two main parks, the Waterfront and the Summit with 8 different themed zones for all your attractions, activities, shows, and rides need. If you want to ride all the rides and visit all the attractions, one day is not enough. Our schedule was a bit tight because of the weather but it did not stop us from having a blast.

There are signs all over the place so you will not get lost. But it's better to get a map for more information on other areas of the park.
THE WATERFRONT-is the first park that you will see near the entrance where you will see the Grand Aquarium, Aqua City and Old Hong Kong Street.

Grand Aquarium at the Aqua City

The Grand Aquarium brings you and your family on a multisensory journey from the shore to the darkest depths of the ocean. You will have the exciting opportunity to explore the myriad forms of life that call the sea home, from a pool filled with sea cucumbers and starfish, to the spectacular Reef Tunnel, where you can view the profoundly beautiful ecosystem surrounding coral reefs. Expansive windows under the water like the 5.5m aquarium dome and an awe-inspiring 13m wide acrylic viewing panel takes you closer to an eye-opening collection of 5,000 fish from over 400 species!

Old Hong Kong Street

Relive the culture of Hong Kong during the '50s -'70s at Ocean Park’s ultimate retro zone. Step aboard the Heritage Tram, savour sounds and tastes from the past on authentically recreated streets and take home souvenirs to keep the memory alive. This photo-friendly area brings the feeling of “yesterday once more” to life for today and tomorrow’s generations.

THE SUMMIT- the second park where the thrill rides and the Polar Adventure are located. This is my favorite area in Ocean Park because of the notable rides like Hair Raiser, Raging River, The Rapids, The Flash, and Mine Train. This is where all the real adventures for the kid at heart begins. All the extreme rides can be found here and if you're in for total adrenaline rush, be sure to check all the rides out and ride!

Mine Train by Samsung VR

The VR Mine Train opens up whole new vistas when you strap on a VR headset! Take a VR adventure through the rainforest, dive into the ocean and fly into the sky in seconds! Dash through urgent turns to avoid attacks from robotic machines! The roller coaster’s natural G-force adds to the thrill with wind effects that truly make you feel like you are soaring and plunging into the scenes you see.

Mine Train

Some of the rides I've mentioned above were under maintenance and has stopped their operation that afternoon because of the erratic weather. But I'm lucky that I was able to ride the Mine Train sans the VR goggles. It's insane! Never felt that extreme skinking feeling in my stomach before. It's thrilling and exhilarating. I will be back and ride this train again.

Bumper Blaster

Swerve from corner to corner at exhilarating speed with friends and family – a classic ride steeped in happy memories for everyone. Chase other drivers or take your brightly-painted car for a gripping spin on the floor. The bumps and jolts never get old at this timeless carnival-esque attraction.

Bumper Blaster

Bumper Blaster was one of Kenzo's favorite rides that day. He's not yet ready to try those extreme rides but that's okay. He was also excited to ride the cable car. Our legs were tired from walking that's why this was the last ride for the three of us.

Cable Car (The Summit)

Cable Car (The Summit)

Riding Ocean Park’s world-famous Cable Car is the ideal way to get between the Waterfront and the Summit. Apart from unhindered views of the sea, sky and surrounding hills, all of which make a great backdrop for a family shot, this soothing journey provide an excellent opportunity to see where you would like to visit next in the Park below.

The park closes at exactly 6:00 p.m. and we're already tired and hungry. It's time to go home but before that, we did a little shopping in one of the stores inside Ocean Park. Kenzo has been bugging me a diecast toy of Peak Tram-trains and we were able to score this double-decker tram at Deep Sea Traders. This souvenir shop sells marine animal-themed goods to create your own personal reef! Portholes into the aquarium make you feel like you’re exploring a treasure trove under the sea, filled with marine animal plushies and themed goodies. They also have goods and merchandise like magnets, apparels, accessories, toys, and a whole lot more.

Time to go home and bring back all the awesome memories we had at Ocean Park Hong Kong. I will definitely back soon and spend a day or two at the park. There are still more attractions to discover, shows to watch, encounters to try, and thrill rides to conquer.

Ocean Park Hong Kong is highly recommended for the kids and kids at heart. One of the best amusement parks I've visited to date and will never get tired of visiting in the future.
