Great Ways to Keep Your Child Active

Tuesday, February 07, 2017

Technology is everywhere. More young children than ever have their own tablet or video games console. This can be a worry for parents. While technology is important to a child’s development and education, it’s much more important for younger children to be able to stay fit and healthy, to get off screens and devices, and start moving.

If you are interested in learning more about how technology and digital libraries have changed schooling, consider studying an online MLIS degree from Rutgers Online. An online master of information degree could help you understand modern methods of information sharing, to enable you to successfully incorporate them into your child’s learning.

Great Ways to Keep Your Child Active

Here are some great ways to make sure your kids stay active.

Limit Screen Time

Many tablets that are designed for children offer parental controls so you can limit the amount of time they can use it. However, even without this, make it clear to your child that they have a certain amount of time on their device, and then they have to do something else. Stick to these rules.

Buy a Ball

It’s one of the simplest things, but all kids love a ball. From babies, sitting on the floor rolling a ball around, to older children trying sports, or just kicking them up against a wall. As well as a ball, be sure to buy other outdoor toys, such as roller skates and scooters.

Go for Family Walks

Exercise is vitally important for the whole family. Why not make a scavenger hunt with your children, and get out there? Explore new areas together. Children love finding new things. They also love using their imagination, so why not pretend you are on a dinosaur hunt? Even older children often love an adventure. Set them different challenges, such as drawing something they’ve seen, or writing a short story.

Start an Active Hobby Together

If you want to be a bit more adventurous, why not try an active hobby. Go swimming, or running together. Get the whole family bikes for Christmas. Activity can be a great way of making sure you spend time together as a family.
Combine Technology and Activity

There’s no reason you can’t have both together. A game like Pokémon Go is a brilliant way of combining the two. Get out there walking, but make it fun. There are many other virtual reality games, and games that use your device’s camera.

Join a Class

Kids love to learn new things that they can tell their friends about. There are so many different classes out there for children. Some to consider include:
  • Martial Arts
  • Swimming
  • Gymnastics
  • Dance
  • Soccer
  • American Football
  • Baseball
It could be something they are already interested in, or something brand new. Have a look together to see what’s on in your local area, and ask if there is anything they are interested in.

Once your child starts school, technology will be a huge part of how they learn, so it is important to let them explore devices beforehand. Just make sure it’s part of a balanced lifestyle.
