Ideas for a Stellar DIY Summer Wardrobe

Sunday, August 30, 2020

The summer is finally here! That means you can put your winter clothes away for another year and bring out the shorts and cool cotton dresses. However, if you’re like many people right now, you’re on a tight budget. Every penny counts, and in addition to wanting to save, new clothes are generally expensive.

However, just because you want to save some dough doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have a fresh summer wardrobe. Check out these ideas for a perfect DIY (Do It Yourself) wardrobe. All it takes is a little creativity!

Ideas for a Stellar DIY Summer Wardrobe

Make Your Own

If you've never sewn or knit before, the idea of making your clothes might sound a little daunting. But, the truth is, with a bit of help from online tutorials you can learn how to knit in no time.

Knitting is a highly relaxing and rewarding activity, and with a little practice, you can make beautiful pieces of clothing and accessories. Knitwear is one of the fashion industry's most coveted styles, and you can wear it all year round.

Find a company online that provides a broad selection of yarns and tools, as well as educational tutorials and downloadable patterns. The best yarn company will also emphasize the community aspect of knitting. There’s a rich tradition of knitting circles, particularly for women (although not exclusively). If you're able, connect with others who can help you get inspired about the craft.

From there, you’ll learn the basics, and before too long you'll have so many crochet summer crop tops, you won’t know what to with them all!

Upcycle Old Clothes

You probably have a few pairs of jeans that you haven't worn in years — why not turn them into cut-off shorts? That dress your aunt gave you that's five times too big for you? Turn it into a t-shirt or a skirt!

Many people have articles of clothing that they love, but they don’t quite fit. So, why not turn them into something that does fit perfectly?

There isn't much technical skill required to make cut-off shorts. All you need is a good pair of scissors. However, if you want to take parts of clothes and turn them into something else, you will need a basic sewing kit. And, much like knitting, you can find quality sewing tutorials on the right website or blog.

Thrift Shopping

Ok, so thrift shopping isn't exactly DIY, but it does save you a great deal of money. Hit up your local Value Village or another local charity shop to find incredible deals on summer clothes and accessories. You'll save money, and you'll have one-of-a-kind items that will be sure to impress your friends.

Thrift shops always carry unique clothing styles, and if you're lucky, you'll find fantastic clothing styles and pieces from past decades. Of course, always remember to wash the clothes before you wear them.

Shopping for a new summer wardrobe doesn't have to be expensive — or boring! Check out your town’s thrift shop for excellent deals and learn some new skills, too.
