National Gifted Week 2019 Kite Flying Event with Promil Four

In this digital age, technology has shaped and changed our lives in so many ways. We are living in an era where learning and information are easily accessible in just one tap or click. These advancements make our life easy but it comes with pros and cons in every aspect of living. As a parent, I'm thankful that my son has developed fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination early because of his iPad and other gadgets at home.

On the other hand, I'm worried now that he is becoming addicted to online games and the adult-child conversations and interactions have been limited unlike before that the parents of my generation taught us the importance of learning in physical play. Mommies and daddies, what childhood activity you miss the most? Is kite-flying one of your afternoon bonding moments with your family and friends? This tradition is still alive and Promil Four invited us last month to join the biggest celebration that aims to nurture the gift of every child- National Gifted Week 2019 Kite Flying Event. Sharing some highlights of the event and the importance of this activity in nurturing your child's gift.

Burnham Green Park- all set for the kite-flying event

Last November 24, 2019, this year’s National Gifted Week spearheaded by the Philippine Center for Gifted Education, Inc. (PCGE) in partnership with Promil Four and support from the Kite Association of the Philippines was successfully launched at Burnham Green, Manila. Kids and the kids at heart were so excited to fly their kites in the sky.

The attendees were given special kits to make their own kite. The kids were encouraged to do whatever they want using the crayons, pens, and paper included inside the kit. Through this activity, we can nurture our child's gift through imagination and creativity.

The busy kids creating their kites

This was Kenzo's first time creating and flying a kite. He was excited to make his own kite that day but not sure of what to do first. Arts director of Masterpiece Movement Teacher Kara Escay facilitated the kite making that day. She taught us the easy steps in making a sled kite- made from a single sheet of paper or plastic, tape, and sticks. Since they are using paper for this, the kids were able to show their creativity and imagination to draw whatever shapes, forms, characters they wanted.

Kenzo and his Philippine Flag

It's also my son's first time to visit this place and he saw the Rizal monument. I was surprised that he drew a Philippine flag and other historical sites here in the country. "This event aims to celebrate the gift that every child possesses. It is a great way for parents to encourage the creativity of their children, have fun and spend some time together. We will also be gathering the most notable experts who will discuss and share their knowledge on how to nurture a child’s gift,” according to Dr. Leticia Peñano-Ho, president of PCGE.

Yay! Can you name the historical sites in Kenzo's kite?

The celebration featured a whole-day kite flying event and the attendees were also treated to exciting games, entertainment, a parade, and other surprises. The PCGE also gathered experts for the two-day conference on revisiting the Multiple Intelligences.

Sharing their expertise were Mr. Ryan Cayabyab, Ms. Shaira Luna, Ms. Kara David, Ms. Roselle Ambubuyog, Dr. Carlos Arcilla, Mr. Ryan Tumbocon, and Mr. Kim Atienza. They discussed how to nurture a child’s gift based on their dominant intelligence which can be among Musical-Rhythmic, Visual/Spatial, Verbal Linguistic, Logical-Mathematical, Science, Interpersonal and Intrapersonal, Naturalistic, or Body-Kinesthetic.

Congrats to all the kids!!!

We had a blast during the event. Kenzo's daddy helped him fly the kite. It was a blissful moment seeing my son held the thread while running then his kite soars up high in the sky. I was a bit tearful during this precious moment, it's like seeing his gift soar above the clouds. This activity has nurtured his interpersonal, intrapersonal and body-kinesthetic gifts. We are hoping to see more physical activities for children ages 12 years old below from Promil soon!

I enjoy truly kite flying, when I was kid in month of February and March - I usually go to shop to purchase kites with different different colors.

It is very adventurous activity while flying kites. I enjoyed a lot while reading your post, it makes me remember my old days. Eventually, thanks for sharing.

    With best wishes,
