5 New Ways to Enrich Your Child’s Summer at Galileo Learning Centers

Thursday, March 16, 2017

As summer approaches, many parents are looking for activities to keep their children busy instead of staying home the whole day playing with their gadgets or watching telenovelas with their yayas. It is an ideal time to take a break from the usual school routine, but also an opportunity for students to learn outside of the traditional classroom and pick up new interests along the way.

Studies have shown it is important that learning should not stop even when school is out. Educators have found that a learning gap called the “summer slide” occurs in the summer vacation months. Rowie Matti, Galileo Learning Program CEO says, “students could lose up to two months of literacy and math skills, especially at the preschool and grade school stage.” This is crucial, as this could affect their foundation for learning and affect their academic performance in the long run.”

5 New Ways to Enrich Your Child’s Summer at Galileo Learning Centers

Matti adds that this is how summer activities facilitated by experts in a fun way can help enrich their learning, helping them with their schoolwork goals when classes start again. This is the core of Galileo’s summer programs, which are composed of fun-filled and meaningful activities.

The Summer Learning Camp (for 1.5 to 3-year-olds)

Focuses on celebrating Filipino Games and Culture. The two-module program this year offers toddlers the opportunity to practice their social, cognitive, and motor skills in preparation for preschool, through fun and traditional Filipino games such as Sungka, Patintero, and Piko.

The Wikang Filipino Reading Program

Students will develop their reading comprehension and vocabulary, along with an appreciation for the country’s culture, with two modules developed using Adarna Publishing House materials. It is a program that is highly anticipated by the parents in our Center because their children are struggling with their Filipino classes. It provides children with an interesting way to learn the language.

The Summer Math Club

Integrates Math concepts to real-life situations, as it aims to enhance students’ mathematical ability, creativity, and critical thinking skills with lessons on money management and entrepreneurship integrated with Math concepts, e.g., basic operations, percentage, decimals, measurement, and graphs.

The Junior Robotics: Creative Engineering Classes

Uses LEGO Education’s WeDo materials and activities to encompass specific subject matter such as Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Language.

This program, which is in collaboration with the Cyberland International Education Centre Singapore, aims to tap in to children’s creativity and combines it with technology as it allows them to construct robot models and program them to move.

Equips children in the digital age that they live in. The modules are conducted in collaboration with Apple-authorized Power Mac Center, with classes on how to create and animate characters and understand basic programming protocols.

After the summer is over, students can keep on learning the Galileo way, with the regular modules for Regular Math, Singapore Math, and English programs. According to Gerardo Cruz, Ph.D., who has been Center Director for Galileo Malolos and Guiginto, Bulacan for several years, he has had success cases with marked improvement in students’ performance even after only 6 months of being in the programs.

The goal is to present learning in a way where children can have fun and be creative on the way to meeting their goals. The Galileo Learning Approach of tailor-fitting the modules to the learning pace and style of each child, also fosters an encouraging and positive environment to create lifelong learners.
