Skin Care Products You Have in your Kitchen

It’s hard to know which skin care products are worth your hard-earned money. For one, everyone has different skin and will respond differently to a product. Secondly, marketing and advertising make it hard to know what really works and what’s hyped up. Finally, it can be hard to know what we’re bringing into our homes when there’s a huge list of ingredients with scientific names.

Fortunately, there’s good news for those who get overwhelmed by options: you probably have skin care products at home that you never even considered. Here are some of the best skin care products that you probably have in your kitchen cupboard already.

Skin Care Products You Have in your Kitchen

Coffee Grounds

Coffee grounds leftover from your morning routine make a powerful body scrub in the shower. Not only does it revitalize and rejuvenate your skin, but it will also leave a subtle hint of your favorite smelling beverage. Add a cap of vanilla extract to create a naturally blended scent that will stay with you all day.

While you exfoliate, take the time to evaluate your skin. Do you have any problem areas? Are there any moles that look concerning? If so, take a look at HealthSumo's article on skin mole removal and deal with the issue as soon as possible.

Sugar and Honey

Sugar and honey aren’t just great for baking-- they make a great, gentle exfoliant for your lips. Even with regular applications of lip balm, your lips accumulate dead skin cells. Mix a small amount of sugar and honey, then apply to your lips in a circular motion. Leave it for a moment (resisting the temptation to lick your lips) then wipe it off with a damp cloth.

If your lips are dry or cracked despite using lip balm on a regular basis, it’s time to switch brands and try something else. There are lots of lip balms that offer temporary moisturization but end up causing more dryness in the long run.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice has a lot of different applications in the beauty world. When you were a child, you may have even tried to use it as a hair lightener in the sun. Believe it or not, lemon juice can help blondes, even those who didn’t come by their fair locks naturally. If you’ve had a mishap at the salon or just want to revitalize your blond hair, mix equal parts lemon juice and conditioner to make a hair mask. Apply it all over and let it sit for an hour before rinsing.

Lemon juice also has astringent properties that can help destroy blemishes on the skin. If you have blackheads, run a slice of lemon over them, let it sit for a few minutes, then wash off with cold water. It’s important to note that lemon juice can have a drying effect if used too often so be sure to moisturize in between.

Milk

Milk baths are a beauty routine of days gone by. The acids in dairy milk work on dry skin, leaving it feeling soft and supple. If you don’t feel like filling a bathtub with milk, that’s fine. Put milk in a bowl with some Epsom salts and essential oils of your choosing to create a lovely hand or foot bath that will leave your extremities feeling healthy and soft for days.

Avocado

You’ll be hard-pressed to find an avocado lover who wants to use their fruit of the millennial gods for something other than a delicious snack. However, avocado lovers know that it doesn’t take much for these delectable eats to over-ripen. When that happens, waste not.

Avocado has lots of enriching properties that make it a great hair or face mask. Mash your avocado with some olive oil and apply liberally to your face, leaving it on for 10-15 minutes before washing. Alternatively, mix the avocado with cacao powder and leave on for the same amount of time for a healthy glow.

You don’t need to spend all your money on skin care products to achieve youthful, healthy skin. When in doubt, open your cupboard and see what you can whip up.
