Wednesday, July 18, 2018

You’ve made it through the tough interview process and you’ve finally scored the internship of your dreams. Congratulations! But, the hard stuff isn’t over quite yet. Now, you need to figure out what you’re going to wear to your summer internship. This can be incredibly tricky sometimes, as you never want to be overdressed or underdressed. Plus, you want to look cute.

Then, add in the fact that its summer and you also don’t want to be a puddle of sweat at the end of the day, and suddenly your clothing options can feel rather limited. But, if you know what you’re doing, dressing for a summer internship can be a breeze. Read on to learn the top 4 rules for dressing for a summer internship.

Top 4 Rules for Dressing for Your Summer Internship

1. Consider the Industry

Your friend may be rocking jeans and a t-shirt every day for her internship at a trendy new startup, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to be the same case for you.

If, for example, you’re going to be a shadowing a lawyer at a high profile law firm, then you likely need to cover up a bit. High necklines, traditional silhouettes, and pant suits will likely be a major part of your wardrobe now.

If, on the other hand, you’re interning with a creative graphic design company, then you’ll probably have more freedom to rock some jewelry and bold prints.

2. Leave the Clubbing Shoes for the Club

No matter what type of office environment you’re working in, it’s best to leave the clubbing shoes for the club.

Trying to rock a pair of stilettos in the office may seem like a fun idea, but after an hour or so of teetering around the office and reaching for the nearest desk so as not to fall over, you’ll quickly realize you’ve made a mistake.

However, this doesn’t mean you need to avoid the heel altogether. Just make sure you stick to ones that keep the height under 4 inches, aren’t too strappy, and, if necessary, abide by the closed-toe policy that many offices have.

3. Pay Attention to Fabric

As we mentioned earlier, summer can be a tricky time to dress because of the heat. But, since you’re now a working girl, spaghetti straps and booty shorts aren’t going to cut it likely.

If you’re looking to stay appropriate and stay cool, then a good rule of thumb to follow is that the thinner the fabric is, then the longer the hemline needs to be. For example, if you’re working with lace or satin, you’ll want to stick to a longer hemline.

If you work in an office that allows shorter skirts, it’s still best to stick to tweed or thick linen to keep it a bit more conservative. If your office cranks the AC like many do during the summer months, it’s also of course always acceptable to rock some cute fashionable pants.

4. Be Careful With Tank Tops

No one likes to have a farmer’s tan, and tank tops are the perfect solution to avoid these.  However, be careful when wearing tank tops to work. Stay away from spaghetti straps and instead opt for loose, flowy tank tops that have wide shoulders.

Pairing it with a pencil skirt is an awesome idea as well. And, if you have a spaghetti strap you really want to wear, you can always put a light cardigan over it.
