Spread ALS Awareness by Watching You're Not You in Theaters

There are things in life that makes us breathless, simple things that make us move. Despite the obstacles, the aches and pains that we experience, there is someone who will give light to the burden and make us realize that life is worth fighting for.

I was invited to watch the VIP special screening of You're Not You at SM Megamall Cinema 6 last November 18. At first I thought I'll be watching a chick flick because the title of the movie screams romance in my ears but it's actually a heart moving film about friendships and unconditional love plus awareness of the life threatening disease- ALS. I'll just give a brief information about ALS and a little synopsis of the movie because I want you to watch it in theaters. It's a great movie, it will really make your tears fall but will educate you about the disease. So without further ado, click CONTINUE READING and save the date please!

Oscar-winner Hillary Swank stars in movie about ALS

The ALS ice bucket challenge has recently taken social media by storm. Hollywood celebrities, local stars, and even ordinary people literally pitched in to support and fund research on the condition that is also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Their social media videos may seem amusing, but there is a deeper reason why they subjected themselves to that bucket of ice-cold water.

This viral campaign started because not much is known about ALS or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, which affects the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. As with its most famous patient, American baseball player Lou Gehrig, people who are diagnosed with this condition degenerate as movement are slowly affected until the later stages that result in total paralysis. People who were otherwise healthy in their younger years start to lose control over the use of their muscles, and soon are unable to speak, walk, and feed themselves.

Hilary Swank as Kate
In the movie You’re Not You, Oscar Award winner Hillary Swank takes on the role of an ALS patient named Kate, a suave, successful classical pianist. She and her husband Evan (Josh Duhamel) are crushed when they find out about her condition, and he goes around looking for someone to take care of Kate as the condition progresses.

Bec (Emily Rossum) is a brash college student and would-be singer who can barely keep her own life together. At first, Evan is hesitant to get her, but Kate sees something special in the younger girl. When Bec takes on the job, they go on adventures of self-discovery and help each other find their own strengths through their weaknesses.

Emily Rossum as Bec
You're Not You explores how two strangers can bring out the best in each other even in the midst of trials and tribulations.  This movie also gives face to the much-talked about ALS and will help people understand the condition better.

I don't review movies, that's why I don't have the authority to give ratings based on the standards BUT this movie deserves 5 stars. I'm quiet watching the movie from beginning up to the end, I'm a tear jerker and tried my best to hod up my tears but it really made me cry buckets. This is a heart breaking story because we don't want to happen this in our lives right? But if it is destined to happen, we should be ready and accept the fact about this degenerating disease. If you happen to know someone who have ALS, I do hope you'll recommend this movie to the his/her friends and relatives. Learn from it and join the fight against ALS!

The movie is distributed and released in the Philippines by Octoarts Films International and will be shown in theaters starting November 26, 2014.
